Amino and Fatty Acids

The principal constituents of proteins are amino acids.
They link together to form different proteins.

All of our muscles and much of our cells and bones are made up of proteins. The body’s need for protein varies from person to person and from life-stage to life-stage.
Amino acids are classified as “essential” and “non-essential”.

“Essential” amino acids are those which are required by all individuals at all times and which must come from the diet as they cannot be synthesised by the body. There are nine essential amino acids which everyone needs; infants and growing children have three additional amino acids which are considered “essential”.

“Non-essential” amino acids can be synthesised in the body from existing amino acids. The key to ensuring a good “amino acid profile” (i.e. getting everything you need) is to make sure you eat enough protein in as wide a variety as possible.
