Lemon balm has been documented since ancient Greek and Roman times. Parts used are the dried leaves often with flowering tops. An essential oil is obtained from these and numerous potentially bioactive substances have been isolated from the essential oil. The main constituents are geranial, neral, citronellal, geranyl acetate, citronellol, and b-caryophyllene.
