Lutein

Lutein

Lutein is a carotenoid present in the typical human diet found in vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and collard greens, and other foods such as egg yolk, kiwi fruit, grapes, orange juice, zucchini, squash, pistachio nuts, and corn.

Lutein is selectively accumulated in the human eye retina from blood plasma and is dominant in the peripheral region of the retina. Meso-zeaxanthin, another carotenoid found in the human retina, is also formed directly in the retina from lutein. Lutein is found in high concentrations in the retina of the eye. As our bodies age, the natural supply of Lutein decreases.
