Let's chat collagen

‘Collagen’. Now’s there’s a word you hear a lot, especially when it comes to beauty, skincare and cosmetic procedures. But what is collagen, why do we need it and how do we get more of it into our bodies?

It’s a protein

Yes, really. It’s made up of a collection of amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and arginine to be precise) and provides structural support in connective tissues, including within the skin, muscles, hair and nails.  Certain types of collagen fibrils, gram for gram, are even stronger than steel.

What does it do?

Collagen is responsible for maintaining structure and elasticity within the skin, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkles and helping skin look plump. It also supports muscle maintenance and has a key role in joint and bone health.

Preventing its loss

Collagen production naturally declines with age, exposure to UV light and smoking. High sugar consumption doesn’t help either. But never fear! With the right nutrients, you can support collagen formation. Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C; this is essential for helping your body produce collagen. Berries, citrus fruits and leafy greens are excellent sources
